connect our camera and download pictures. This last Christmas, I also started using it to upload songs onto my IPOD, and my kids have been using it since then for their MP3 players as well. 5 months ago, I was given a new Kodak digital, and started downloading those pics also. Last month, I brought home 2 memory sticks from work- one is a Memorex Traveldrive, and the other is a Staples Relay drive. At first, the Relay drive worked, but now when I try to use either of those in the ports, it shuts the computer down with no error message. Can someone please tell me why this is happening? Our computer is about 3 years old.

I should have added: Only the memory sticks shut down the computer- the cameras and MP3 players are still working in the drive....

It could be that from all of the use you have given these front USB ports, they might have developed a short of some other problem. Try plugging your USB thumb drive into one of the USB ports on the "back" of your computer and see if the problem exists there also. If so you may have damaged the USB buss. You could always install a PCI USB card.
