my first car that I bought was a 1969 Pontiac GTO. Paid $600 for it, drove it for years, loved the car. My next was a 1968 Chevelle SS396, big block a 4-speed and 4:11 posi, what more could a teen ask for! paid $500...i miss the mid '70's when all that muscle was availiable for a song and a dance.
Although i don't like "foreign" cars, I have owned 2 honda accords, a 1982 and a 1990. The '82 I bought 4 myself when I was working 250 miles away from home and the '90 I bought for an annulment marriage of mine so she had a dependable car. The '82 had 117,000 on it and the '90 had 121,000. since u need cheap on gas and reliable transportation, i'd suggest looking at an 8-10yr old accord, that should bring the price down 2 ur range and affordability. keep mileage around 100-130,000 ( anymore in a metro area figure 10-12,000 miles for each year the car is old) and have a certified mechanic put it on a hoist and look at it before u buy it. Make sure he looks at everything especially motor mounts if u live in the north east where salt is heavily used during winter.
mostly what rusts out on these cars normally is the "dogleg", the part of the body just above and to the front of the rear wheels, its common, don't worry about it.
check ur local newspaper and such for a car like this, usually the ppl selling them in the paper bought them new and maintained them well but weren't offered anything on a trade so they decided 2 sell it themselves.
u can easily expect 25-27mpg city driving 2 school in these cars and will last well into the 250,000 mile range with regular maintainance.
Good luck and GOD bless.

In 1984, I bought a 1968 VW Beetle for $400. My sister had just wrecked her 1972 VW and I used her engine in the swap. She was so pissed. But legally it was not her car. It was dad's.
For a first car for a 16 y/o, look into a 2004/5 Chev Cobalt LS coupe. Do not get a Cavalier damnit! The average yearly mileage for any car is 12-15K a year. A 3 y/o car w/ 80K miles is one to avoid. However, if a 3 y/o car has 36K, that would be acceptable. Used cars are everywhere. Carmax, eBay, and dealers all over. Good luck.

My first vehicle was a 77 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup. I got it from a farmer that was upgrading to a bigger pickup. I had it for 10 years before I sold it. I found it in the newspaper.
Being 16 you need to have a list of possible vehicles and talk to the insurance company. Insurance can cost a lot on some vehicles.
I have never had a problem with a vehicle that came from a dealership.
I have bought vehicles from in laws that they were upgrading and was a good vehicles. A dealership is a good place to get a used vehicle. They usually try to have them checked out. The average mileage on a car is about 14,000 miles a year.
Good luck

my first car was a dodge d50 pickup. the average miles put on a car should be about 15,000 per year. That is for normal city driving with not too much extra travel. If fuel mileage is what you are looking for go with a good used Toyota or a smaller truck if you need the ability to haul stuff. Start looking on the internet to get an idea of what type of car or truck you want, then look in the local classified ads in the newspaper. Good Luck! hope this helps.

Oh! Sorry I was daydreaming. If I'd suggest any used car, it's first off be a Chevy Cobalt. They are reliable, come in a coupe and sedan version and a whole lotta options to suit your needs. Plus, they get 35 MPG and the base MSRP for a brand new one is 13,790, so you can get a used one for a reasonable amount of money. Good Luck.

Mine was an 89 Ford Tempo...it was hot! LOL
As for your first car, congrats! You want to look at 4-cylinder cars, because they will be best on gas--like a Chevy Cavalier, Chevy Malibu, Honda Civic, Ford Focus, etc.
As for mileage, it depends on the year of the car. A good rule of thumb is the average is 10,000 miles driven a year. So a 2000 car should have close to 70,000 miles on it. Of course, you want less, but that is average.
To look for used cars, try Carmax (if you have any in your area) or try local dealers who all have used car lots on site as well. Be sure to browse online first--my boyfriend found a used car he liked listed for 7,500 online, and went to the dealer and it was priced at 10,000. If he hadn't printed that "online special" they wouldn't have given it to him for that price. Bring someone with you like mom or dad who has bought a car before. Also bring someone who knows some stuff about car repair, they can check the engine and things for you. Good luck, enjoy!!

My first car was a 68 caddy... you wont find them laying around these days.... look for something with lower miles, check the oil and take it for a ride, listen for any weird sounds, if you can bring it to a garage and hava mechanic give it a quick check over and see what he thinks....
