Intel's Core 2 based chips are superior in every measure.

And yes, if building a new system Quads (Q6600 - $270) are a great way to future proof as new games and CPU intensive apps (Adobe, video editing, etc) are already multi-threaded, and most future apps will be multi-threaded.

Here is a CPU chart:

Intel's Core 2 Duos are the fastest line of processors today, but AMD's Barcelona chips should be out soon (though we've been saying that for God knows how long), and those might put AMD back up ahead.

No, the Quad-core's are not quicker than the Dual-cores for most people. Nothing except applications designed for engineers and such utilize 4 cores, and the Quad-Core processors come at lower clock speeds. They may have a higher overall processing power, but the Dual-Cores are faster in applications.

The PC Mark 2005 rankings that Izzy gave are misleading. The sole reason it exists it to determine how powerful a computer is, and not how well it will do in performing tasks that people actually perform. Quake 4 is a much better benchmark. Although it shows Quad-Cores as faster than their Dual-Core counterparts at the same speed, the performance increase is negligible, and the price increase is massive.

Well I think it is clear at this point from the other answers, Intel is on top right now, but AMD will have new stuff out soon.

As for dual versus quad, the dual cores are not faster in all applications, there are several applications that are multi-threaded, which allows the quad core to be faster. A lot of video encoding/editing programs are already multithreaded, and even photo programs. Multithreading is definately the future, so I would most definately recommend the quad, even if it is not faster than the dual in some things now, 2-3 years from now you will be kicking yourself if you go with dual over quad now.

Yes, Intel's dual core design is not only faster but it is more efficient.
