I've noticed that the shifter on my 5-speed 1991 Toyota Celica GT is loose compared to other manuals. My dad has a Mazda RX-8 and his shifts smooth without any wiggling at all. Is there a way to tighten it?

You must remove the shifter gearknob and shifter cover, this will expose the shifter shaft. It either will have a screw cap or small bolts securing the shifter to the gearbox. Remove the shifter whilst in neutral possition. On the bottom you'll see a pin with ball. There is a plastic or fibre bush that clicks onto the ball going into the gearbox selector, this is worn out. Replace and refit shifter and the play should be gone.

The car is 16 years old. What do you expect, that it will never wear out. And you are comparing to newer cars. If you want to tighten it up have it rebuilt. No short cuts except maybe replacing the nylon tip on the bottom of the shifter.

The shifter on rear wheel drive cars goes straight into the transmission.

The shifter on a front wheel drive car uses a cable or linkage to connect to the transmission and tends to wear out or stretch.

Short of replacing all the linkage, there's not much you can do.
Maybe look at the linkage/cable mounting hardware to make sure it's tight.
