I just ran the CPUID program to find out that my RAM is running at 166 MHz. Isn't this a little slow? I thought they ran at 400- 533 MHz. I was looking for the speed so I know what new RAM to buy. I think I should get PC 2700 according to what my computer can take. Can anyone enlighten me as to why it is running so slow or what it means?

RAM Clock speeds can vary greatly, as you've already seen.

512mb RAM running at 2700Mhz will be faster than 512mb running at 166Mhz.

Additional comment: (my email reply bounced back, this is what it said!)

As there are so many variations on types & (mainly) speeds of RAM, I personally use Crucial's System Scanner Tool; here if you're interested:

http://www.crucial.com/

Run the tool & it'll scan your pc & then advise you on the memory that your pc takes.

Rule of thumb, providing you have the right connection to your pc, most RAM sticks will work fine on whatever clock speed they run at.

If you put in a stick that runs faster than your motherboard can handle, it should still operate, but at the slower speed that your motherboard recognises.

Run the crucial advisor is my advice & you'll get to see all the different types that your pc can handle.

Hope it helps.

If you are running duel data rate memory then your actual speed is 333. 166 x 2 = 332/333

Go to the SPD tab in CPUID and check to see what memory your are running. PC2100 = 166, PC2700 = 333, PC3200 = 400, etc
