Bettas are one of the best choices for a small tank, but they aren't the only one.

Provided you have a filter and can keep the correct temperature (some of these species will need a heater), look into guppies and the related Endler's livebearers (get only males - you don't have enough room for them to reproduce and the males are the more colorful) or one of the smaller killifish species. Some kilifish only live a short period, lay eggs, then die (annuals) while others have a longer lide span. Do some research into the species you can find to get one that you'll be comfortable keeping.

(Endlers and killis aren't as commonly found, so you may need to ask your local store to order these for you.)

2 gallons isnt anything, so with that you really need to looking atonly bettas.

if you increase the gallons then you can work with other smaller, easy, color fish.

But if you have only 2 gallons, only be looking into bettas.

Well. maybe a sparkling gourami, they are smaller than bettas, and you can fit about 3 in a two gallon tank. But they are alittle harder to find in LFS, try looking online.

EDIT: You cant choose, angelfish, or goldfish. Angelfish will reach about 10 inches long and 15 inches high and need at least 29-30 gallons, Goldfish.....dont bother. the smallest varity will reach over 12 inches, and feeder fishes will reach about 24 inches.

Bottomline, dont even consider any of these fishes.

Betta's are perfect, but your sick of them.

2 Gallons is a tiny little container and very confining to most fish. They need room to swim and thrive, even the small ones, and no creature likes life in prison.

To go with goldfish is stupid - the smallest goldfish grow to 8 inches long! To go with Angel fish is stupid - they grow to 7 inches long and a foot tall! Even little neons need proper schools and space.

You can get a couple of guppies and a couple of ghost shrimp. That's about it.

Paradise fish.
Though 1 male and 2 female dwarf gouramis would also be okay.

i have some platys in my tank and i think they have been wonderful they are very peaceful and seem to get along with all the other fish in there but if you don't want to deal with the hassle of babies you you should make sure you get all the same sex because mine breed like crazy but even with the babies they are great fish and easy to take care of.

Opposed to the "don't chose Betta's" answer, i have had a few and love them. They have much more personality than a goldfish and live much longer. (My first one lived 3 years.) They are also beautiful and survive on little to no care. (They ate the bacteria off the roots that are come form the top of the plant in their bowl.)

Try goldfish. You can neglect them and they insist on living. But they are a very pretty fish. We had one in a 1 gallon bowl. It lived there for 3 years. We would go on vacations and it did well.
