Here are the details. I hear something about a main relay going bad or something when it is hot. Yesterday was a hot day. Though I am not sure if it is a relay problem. Here is what happens:

1. Put key in ignition, turn key. All lights come on fine.
2. Check headlights, they are bright.
3. Turn key to start. Nothing but a loud CLICK coming from what I think is the starter. Nothing more happens. If I hold the key in the start position, the lights dim just a little as you'd expect, and is clearly not the battery.

I need to figure this out TODAY. I have to go to San Antonio tomorrow. Any help is appreciated.

ok your problem sound like the starter solenoid you can replace just that but sometimes it's just better off to replace the whole starter also make sure you battery has water in it if you have caps on your battery most people don't know to fill them with water just get a screw driver and pop them off and pour water in it until full then just tap them back on. that could very well be one of your problems too... have the starter checked at your local parts store once off and if you have a battery charger you can (check the starter yourself pos. on the 2 screws in the back ground to the metal shell then hook up the neg. to the neg. side of the battery and the pos. tap it to the pos. side. and you should hear it start if nothing then you know the starter is bad also put a charge on the battery... if water level was low...

p.s. don't touch the acid in the battery

First go out and loosen the battery cables and rotate them on the battery posts. Then retighten them. If your battery is over 5 years old, you need to buy a new battery now. In the mean time, get a jump start, because your starter motor is probably ok. See the jump start online video below. Once the car is running, drive to the auto parts store and have the battery and charging system checked for free. You can buy the new battery and install it yourself to get the car on the road.

Take a set of jumper leads from your battery ,if it,s ok and connect to the starter motor direct by passing all electrics and see if it turns the engine over. If it doesnt the starter needs repair or replacement

First and foremost, its NOT the battery, but go ahead and "jump' it to prove it to yourself. If you have a solenoid separate from the starter jump across the posts from the wire from the battery to the wire going to the starter, should crank if thats the bad part,Sounds like starter if its a built in solenoid.....Good Luck.....George

Boost the car, if it starts it was the battery, if not its the starter or the relay. Its not the alternator.
