when filling tank does reserve automatically fill or do you have to open it...

Filling the tank fills both the main and reserve. The fuel petcock on the bottom of the tank controls the reserve fuel capacity, by allowing the fuel level to drain down to a specific point, leaving a small amount of fuel in the bottom of the tank. When you turn the petcock to 'reserve' then you can use the remaining fuel in the tank to get you to the nearest gas station.

Don't forget to switch the petcock back to "run" position after you fill your tank, or your reserve fuel won't be there the next time you want it.

It fills automatically. Reserve is actually the lower part of the main tank. There is no separate tank.
Thumbs down to all who know what they're talking about. Interesting. Wonder who the moron is. Obviously not someone who has ridden an older motorcycle. You have some very good answers above, with descriptions and pictures. I only wish they still came with reserve. I miss it.

cgriffin gave the simplest to understand answer.
Here's a diagram so you can visualize it -
http://www.bikebandit.com/parts/
Go to - Honda 2003 CB750SC - Fuel Tank - #3 Petcock
When the petcock lever is in the on position (6 o'clock), fuel flows down the long tube.
When the fuel level drops below the top of the tube, no fuel can escape the tank and it appears empty.
Turn the petcock lever to reserve (12 o'clock), and fuel will be able to escape the tank from the base of the petcock.
This is a little long, but the step-by-step instructions will help you to understand.
Enjoy your bike!

Sorry, but .... Du,,, Du,Daaaaa

You only have one hole to open. (on most bikes)

There are two syphons, normal will take you <1 gallon or so. Usually somewhere around 30 miles from empty. So you dont have to worry, but do plan to stop soon.

The second syphon is a bit shorter allowing the remaining gas to flow through the selection of our gas thumbtab. This is simple a primative way of letting you know to plan a stop.

So, for those of you who are new, if your engine quits while you are racing, reach down and slide the thumbtab to reserve and exit within 20 miles.

It is automatic.

It is a lower opening in the petcock that lets the last little bit of gas dribble into the carbs, good for about 15 or so miles more.
