As a guy that has had both long hair and short at different times in my life I have found it is just easier to take care of short hair, wash it comb it and walk out of the house.
On girls I pretty much like any style they choose, I've seen good looking women with short styles as well as long hair styles.

Guys: It depends. Some guys can really pull of a NONE emo/goth or Disney style long hair cut. And it looks hot too. Others are better left with short hair, or a little long and a big spiked and messy.
Girls: I prefer long hair. I love my long hair and I like it at the middle of my back, and I was devastated when this stupid stylist cut my hair to my shoulders! Worst cut ever! I literally cried.

Both long for girls and guys, I have thick curly hair so I love seeing guys/girls with thick curly hair it's so pretty and versatile.
