really nothing. the first 2 columns on the periodic table are called alkali and alkali earth metals because they are used to determine the alkalinity of solution. in other words to describe the hardness or softness of water. the main difference is the number of valence electrons of the two columns. the alkali metals have 1 electron available for bonding while the alkali earth metals have 2 electrons inthe valence shell. there are many differences associated with the difference of outer electrons. but mostly they react kinda the same. whenever the alkali earth metals bind with a non metal in a 1-2 relation. the alkali metal int he same row will usually bind in a 1-1 row.
