I watched Oprah last week and I'm going to now be forever looking for signs of autism in my baby. :'( I really wish I hadn't even watched. But is it normal for a 6 month old to crawl around and smack the floor or other surfaces, like the bed, or toys? I think he likes the different sounds they make but is this an early sign? What can I do to prevent this?

Our son has autism. That would be a sign when they are 2, not 6 months of age. At 6 months they are exploring with sound and creating sounds.

What to look for at 6 months- babbling. Our son didn't babble at all- he went from 18 hours of colic to no sounds at all unless he was crying for some other reason. He was not making eye contact. When we smiled at him, he did not smile back- he seemed to glare. He also had a high pain tolerance at that age (and now) bumping his head and not saying a word.

If your baby interacts with you, that is a good sign that your baby is fine. If your baby babbles or is starting to- another good sign that your baby is just fine.

Try not to worry. As a parent of a child with autism, I can tell you that there are worse things than autism. Far worse.

Good luck!

you may want to check out Leslie Burbies book, it has a good checklist of symptoms that a child has at certain ages http://www.amazon.com/Early-Autism-Toddlers-Infants-Babies-ebook/dp/B00I5ETPWM

If your really concerned about it you can always go see your pediatrician but it least your son is crawling at 6 months. My son could barely sit up at 6 months and at a year he rolled everywhere he wanted to go. Autistics like repetitive things such as hitting things with thier hands or smacking toys against a wall but if he starts to miss all of the important milestones such as walking or talking then I would be worried.
Now they diagnose autism at a much earlier age than they did 15 years ago when my son was born. If the pediatrician sees any telltale signs he can refer you for the proper testing when appropriate. I am the mother of a non verbal autistic 15 year old son.
Good Luck!

oh boy.... be careful not to let your worry cause your baby stress. Most babies are just fine. Really! 6 months would be very difficult to determine any mental disorder. Talk to other parents you trust. Banging objects is normal.
I personally think there are too many doctors and parents that take worries to extreme and dianose their children with stuff like ADD. "I don't like that behavior, therefore the kid must have something wrong with him. Pop a pill to fix it." So please be careful when you ask a doctor about certain behaviors and get a 2nd or 3rd option. Trust your mother instincts. Doctors are human and are not always right. Take a look at the links I added below. I think you will find them very helpful. (you can probably find the Happiest Baby on the Block in the library)

I think you are just being a wee bit paranoid, that is not strange for a baby to do that he is a baby. Trust me I have a child with high functioning autism. Besides it is not the end of the world when and if your child is on the autism spectrum.

Six month olds do things like this because they're learning and exploring their surroundings. It's just like when they learn they have fingers and toes and put them right into their mouths. It's because they can! Or, when they throw their binky across the room just so you go get it and give it back to them. They do it because they can.

The important question to ask yourself is - does your baby interact with you? When you talk to him, does he look at you? That kind of thing.

It will provide you with pertinent information, based on real research and observations - NOT the opinions of an actress who has zero medical knowledge, only her opinions and HER actions as it relates to HER kid.

I believe Inked mommy besides. in case you have concerns, do somewhat study so which you recognize what to look out for. maximum young infants are clinically determined in the previous age 3 (maximum being around 2 years previous). they say the faster you "capture" it...the greater effective remedies may be. That the place my predicament is equipped in. Tyler isn't clinically determined till January twenty 9th & he's 4. i think like kicking myself many times happening for no longer noticing it faster and ignoring people's comments. that's a $h!tty feeling to recognize there could desire to be something incorrect with your baby. superb of success Nina.
