I have a 3 year old dell dimension 4600 pc with xp home edition and a gateway pc with win 98.
I want to install a router to connect both PCs. I currently use a cable modem on the dell pc.
The dell pc with the cable modem are used in the basement and I want to put the old pc upstairs. I will be using a
Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router.
The old pc only has usb ports. My computer skills are pretty limited, how do I make these connections? Thanks

You Should be able to get a usb wireless network adapter for the old one. just install that adapter and it should show your connections, find your Connection and your ready to go. hope this helps. good luck!!!

You need to install a LAN Card in the gateway pc so that you can use LAN cables between the two computers and the router. You could buy a LAN card, but there are so many of them being thrown out these days that you should be able to get one (or two) from a garage sale for a few dollars. Then download the drivers from the internet, because windows 98 will not have the needed drivers.

You may need a nerdy friend to help you.

I suggest you get the old PC, with only USB ports, network interface cards (wired or wireless). This is the way I know you can connect them to the router and share files between all your computers.

Connect the Router direct to the cable modem and have both PCs go through the router, wired or wireless will do.

Hope this helps.

Are you sure there is not an Ethernet Port on the older machine. It will be just a fraction larger than but look exactly like a Phone Plug in.
If not hen you can buy a wireless USB Adapter, or you can buy an Ethernet Card and Install it yourself they are Quite easy and the simply plug in, allowing the use of an ethernet cable then

There are USB 802.11G cards you can buy. Install the router downstairs by following the directions in the manual and then install the wireless upstairs and install it.

Since 98 has so many issues with USB, I would buy a wireless (PCI) card for it instead.
