I have a 3 year old dell dimension 4600 pc with xp home edition and a gateway pc with win 98.
I want to install a router to connect both PCs. I currently use a cable modem on the dell pc.
The dell pc with the cable modem are used in the basement and I want to put the old pc upstairs. I will be using a
Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router.
The old pc only has usb ports. My computer skills are pretty limited, how do I make these connections? Thanks

You will need to purchase a "wireless internet' PCI card for the machine that you want to move upstairs.

In most cases the software for the card must be installed first, so be sure to read and documentation that comes with the card. You will then need to remove the side cover from your computer and install the WIFI card into any open PCI (white) slot. Then you will need to restart your system. 98 should detect the card and install the software for it. After the card is installed you will need to set windows so that is looks to the WIFI card for it's internet connection. This is done in the Control Panel under Internet Options. Click Start>Control Panel>Internet Options. Select the "Connections" tab and then click the "Setup" button. This should open the Connections Wizard. Now, since I don't have 98 set up on any of my systems at this time, I'll have to give you the instructions for XP. They should be pretty close to those for 98.

On the first page of the wizard just click next. On page two, choose "Connect to the Internet". On page three choose "Set up my connection manually". On pager four choose "Connect using a broadband connection that is always on", and click next, and then click "Finish". That should do it.

But be advised that running Windows 98 on an open WIFI connection is very dangerous in that Microsoft no longer supports Win98 so there are no longer any "Security" updates for it. This makes any system running 98 extremly vulnerable to web attacks. You may want to concider upgrading your computer to XP.
