I just bought a house with an old in-ground Gunite/concrete pool. It's not in the best shape and probably needs to be painted and/or re-plastered. I don't have the money to pay someone to paint the pool and I certainly can' t afford to re-plaster. The pool is currently drained. The town charges me to refill the pool via my water bill - around $500. I've done a basic cleaning of the pool and patched a hole/crack with approriate patch material.

My choices are:
- Paint it myself: Sounds like it will require a lot of time and I'm worried about the weather holding up here in the northeast. My understanding is that I'll need to power-wash the surface using something like TSP and then a matching epoxy paint.
- Fill it and worry about it next year, even if that requires redraining the pool.

Which way is the right way to go for someone on a tight budget?

I've owned pool homes most of my adult life. I'd NEVER paint a pool.

Certainly a decent pressure washing with appropriate chemicals to bring it up to an acceptable level can help; as will finding and properly patching.

With no offense; and relating to how much actual swim time you may have left in the season ( I live in FL, so I have no probs) you might just bite the bullet; compromise with the aesthetics, and fill the pool; since an EMPTY pool is far worse than a UGLY one.

I'd also suggest; after any chemical clean; DO NOT run that residue through the filter and backflush. RENT/BUY; flush drain pumps; available even in garden hose diameter fittings.

Certainly the crack/damage/etc. has to be addressed; and you might not know the success of that until you refill at least to the level of the patch; but I want so much to believe that the purpose of a pool isn't strictly to judge the wall issues in perceptions of others.

How do you not paint a pool that's been previously painted for 25 years, though?

Never paint a pool! The is only 1 reason to replaster and that is if the plaster has worn off enough to allow leakage. If you just do not like the looks...live with it. What does it look like? If there is algae stains a chlorine wash will solve it (except black algae which has roots). If is is dirt stuck to scale deposits an acid wash will work. Do not attempt these yourself. Both of these washes are not very expensive.

Second option. You live in the northeast? You won't be swimming too much right now. Brrrr.
