Without knowing the family, I'd think it a trendy way to get at the popular nickname Ellie (and all it's related forms). That just seems to be why the majority of parents use it as of late.
I do, however, know a family that adopted a little girl from Peru (she's about 15 now), and this is her name (birth name ... they didn't change it). So if the family was Spanish or Italian, I'd simply assume it a nice, traditional choice.
So really, it all depends on the family. ;) Blond-haired, blue-eyed little Canadian girl? LOL Just another trendy "Ellie." Dark-complexioned Mexican child? Simply a natural choice fitting with their culture. ;)

I think of the name "Elliot".
Eliana sounds English. But at the same time it sounds like a modern 2007 name.

I think it's like German. But I simply love the name! If someone gave me a kid right now (girl) I would name her Eliana. It's cute, unquie. And perfect!!
