The biggest thing is to read the manuals! Whenever you buy a new product (baby or not) read the manual cover to cover. When installing a carseat, read the carseat manual AND the vehicle manual.

Also, periodically check things and re-read the manuals as you change settings, harness heights, etc.

You can't...at anytime a baby item may be recalled. And just a little clarification. There wasn't anything wrong with the crib, it was how it was put together. Some folks don't know how to read instructions and put the rail on upside down. I have that same crib and it was put together correctly therefore no problem. But there is no certainty that an item of any kind won't be recalled at some point.

Buy new. Check out the crib before you buy. Is it sturdy? Can you fit ANYTHING between the crib bars and mattress? If so- look elsewhere.

It SHOULD have a spring bottom, not wood (although I do own one with a wood bottom that I like). The sides should come up and down with little difficulty but never just FALL down. When one side is pulled up, the other should lock.

Buy a new mattress. Do not use a crib bumper, pillow or stuffed animals with a newborn or young baby.

Check consumer reports and REGISTER EVERYTHING YOU BUY IMMEDIATELY- they will notify you of a recall!

that recall isn't about the product being unsafe, it was about people putting the product together incorrectly. do not assume you know how to put it together, read the manual!!!
when you get the crib together shake it, yank on the rails all the things your baby will do to make sure it is stable.

i use the jenny lind cribs from walmart/target/toys r us etc and i have 4 kids and have never had a problem.

Read consumer reports and google the name brand of the item before you buy it. It will come up with recalls if there are any. Make sure you know the model numbers you are interested in. Good luck.
