The earth is a sphere, A map is flat. So, the corners have to be stretched to make it lie flat!
Less distortion is possible by using a Triangular map. A flattened triangle can Geometrically represent a 'quadrant' of the globe in this manner.
[See - Secrets of the Great Pyramid by Peter Tomkins! ( the 'math' is in there)]
The Egyptians Maps were drawn this way at least as far back as 3300 BC. Modern methods are STUPID compared with the geometric simplicity of Egyptian knowledge concerning this. Most of the worlds recorded knowledge was destroyed. There once was a huge 'Library/Archive' in Greece that served as a repository for scholars and educators. Due to mans ignorant mentallity, this great repository of knowledge was burned and destroyed! Much of mans early history and knowledge was kept there. Sad !

A spherical earth or a part of it is to be shown as a flat surface and that inevitably results in distortion. It is a geometrical distortion caused by projection and can be mathematically corrected.

Many map makers over the cenruries have had a go,
