It has 1 free electron which it gives up and thus forms oxides, chlorides etc, like metals. Thus it behaves like metals but because it is a gas at room temperature, it doesn't behave like a metal. Solid hydrogen may have some properties common with metals. It is a bit of anomaly.

Hydrogen is essentially a proton and electron giving it UNIQUE bonding properties; a metal is defined as an electron contributor, and metals carry an electric current. I wonder how good an electrical conductor Hydrogen is; non- metals tend to be insulators.

Its more for convenience sake. In some periodic table, it is actually detached from the main group of elements due to its unique properties.

It is placed in group I, as it has one valence electron.
