Between stimulus and response there is time. Use that time wisely.

What I mean is that you have to train yourself not to respond immediately and to use that time to choose a response. Take a deep breath. That calms you down a bit. Also, plan your response. You can give a generic response like,
"Wow, I expected you to be more mature than that." or
"Please don't bother me, I have important things to think about." or
"Excuse me, I really wasn't listening." or
"Are you so insecure that you feel a need to pick on other people?" or
"I really don't have time for this. I've got to go."

Speak calmly to them. Ask them if something is really bothering them and if you can help.

Whatever you choose to do, you have to take time to practice your response. After practice, your response becomes second nature, and you won't fly off the handle. Usually people pick on you to get a response. Don't give them what they want.

If people taunt or insult you for no reasons, just tell yourself that they are proving that you are way above them in term of human quality. You will actually end up sympathising with them . A learned, cultured and wise person won't go around taunting or insulting people.

Realize the situation for what it is. Ask yourself what is the worst case scenario if this situation was to continue WITHOUT
your participation or attention giving. In other words, know that you are the smarter and more intelligent one when these situations develop and just simply move on. Just ignore them and do not give them any satisfaction or attention what so ever.
Then ( when it's safe ) smile. :)
