Batting Average is Hits divided by At Bats.

In your case,
36/125=0.288

ba= ab/hits
125/36=3.472 In baseball stats, this would typically be represented as a three place decimal of 0.347

If you have ever heard the expressing "batting 1000" it basically means getting a hit every time you are at bat. A perfect batting average would really be 1.000 however.
