If you've got the Power DVD, You'd have no problem! (PowerDVD plays Everything!)
I think the version of your program is old, so here is a free link to download the newest version of it:
http://www.9down.com/Cyberlink-PowerDVD-Ultra-Deluxe-v7-3-Multilingual-8512/
If you still have problems to play the file you want, you can convert it. You can convert AVI format to MPEG or something playable!
There is a free link to download a good converter:
http://www.winavi.com/en/download/download.htm
AVI, is a good format because of it's quality but also bad because of the space it takes on your computer. So I'd really prefer MPEG 2 rather than AVI.
Hope it helps!

What does it do when you double click the file, what does it do? Open the wrong application? It may be an association problem. To fix this, open your Windows explorer, click Tools on the menu bar, click folder options. After the dialog opens, click the "file types" tab. Scroll down the list of file extension until you get to "AVI". Single click "AVI". Down in the "details for 'avi' extension" section, it tells you what application opens the AVI file. Click "change". If windows media player is in the list, click it and click ok. If the windows media player is not listed, click "Browse" and go to the directory that your windows media player application is located. Click the windows media player exe file and click ok. This will associate your widows media player with AVI files. After that, it should open after you double click it.

VLC sucks. Sure, it's fine for general usage, but anything more and you're asking for trouble. Try the new, free, and now more versatile and better GOM Player. http://www.gomplayer.com/main.html Better than VLC, free, and contains all codecs in one package!
I'd normally recommend the CCCP, but I think more people are going to prefer GOM Player for their general video viewing.
