Historic. Havana was the playground of the US rich and famous until Castro siezed power in the late 1950's. It was also Gangster Inc. for the American Mafia, which is what prompted the communist takeover. And there is the key - comminism in the back yard the the US of A. CIA tried with the Bay of Pigs for regime change and failed. Sanctions were put in place by the US to try and break Castro's hold, but the people remained loyal to him. Even the missile crisis didn't caused him to fall.

Many reasons are given but they tend to go back to the Monroe Doctrine. All of the presidential doctrines on the embargo are in support of the previous one all the way back.

[quoting Wikipedia]
The Monroe Doctrine declared that no challenge to U.S. dominance would be tolerated in the hemisphere."

The fact the US didn't impose sanctions on the Batista regime has led some scholars to question the true reason for the embargo; according to Noam Chomsky, this was revealed in "a declassified 1964 State Department document [which] declares Fidel Castro to be an intolerable threat because he 'represents a successful defiance of the United States, a negation of our whole hemispheric policy of almost a century and a half,'[/quote]

Many people ask why we cant embargo other nations such as n. korea or china but obviously we cant under the same doctrine. Starting a new doctrine would be rough. Considering what the original one has cost us in world opinion (and $$$$$$$) but I suppose if anyone could do it then Bush could. Something like "no nation shall challenge US dominance anywhere in the world".

I went to Cuba last year and it is really beautiful. There are lots of grand houses which were owned by the Americans before the war when Castro sent them packing. Cuba became a communist country and was supported by Russia. Since the fall of the Iron curtain Russia and eastern europe no longer support Cuba and the people there have problems getting luxury items. When I was there nobody said anything bad about Castro - in fact quite the reverse. I've heard American's say that this is because if anybody did speak up they'd be imprisoned and tortured and it is a fact that many Cubans die every year trying to escape to the US in boats. To get back to the question - it's because after the revolution the Americans had to leave Cuba and they were a bit upset when they found out that the Cuban government had allowed the Russians to build some missile sites on the island aimed at the US..

It's only America who doesn't like a form of communism and possible threat so near to them . Has the embargo worked, as the rest of the world trades with Cuba.

I sort of think that when they parked those nuclear war heads 90 miles off of our coast we saw them as a security threat. I may be wrong, but I some how doubt it. Nothing has changed with their leadership or methods of doing business, so I see no reason to lift the embargo. They really don't have anything we need or want. Well I do have to say they are a good buffer for hurricanes, which are usually weakened after hitting their island first.

Politics - the Cubans who left Cuba are vehemently anti-communist and pro republican.

They make up a hugely powerful voting bloc in Florida.

Side note - if they weren't so pro-GOP, Al Gore would have won Florida handily, and the Bush nightmare would never have happened.
