California has three college/university systems.

The University of California system is made up of high quality research universities that are highly selective. All are highly ranked. UC-Berkeley is the highest ranked -- but UCLA and UCSD are close behind.

San Diego State University is part ofthe California State University system. None of the schools in this system are particularly selective. The Cal Polytechnical Schools are decent -- but many of the others have reputations that are not great. SDSU, in particular, does not have a great reputation. I'm shocked at how many people here are telling you that SDSU is better. It isn't even close.

You can see college rankings at US News. I've included a link below.

The third system is made up of community colleges -- two year feeder schools.

If you are thinking of transferring, you will have to choose a new major. Law is a graduate degree in the US.

The University of California system schools all have much better reputations than San Diego State. In general, in America, and "University of" will probably be better than the State University in the same state. There will be exception, especially if you're doing agriculture or certain other highly practical subjects, but that's a pretty good rule.

The University of California system is the most prestigious of the state schools in California. The only school that outranks them in California is Stanford. Of the UC schools, Berkeley is the "best" followed by UCLA.

In all seriousness, I'd never heard of San Diego State until you mentioned it. (That's really bad, because I'm familiar with a *lot* of schools.)

One resource that will provide you with a rough guide as to school quality is US News. They publish a yearly ranking of colleges and universities. By way of comparison, Berkeley is a top 25 school. They're also the highest ranked public university in the US. San Diego State is "fourth tier."

People often want to think highly of their local colleges, but objectively any University of California school would be better than San Diego State.

San Diego is way better than UC., BUT the quality is just 30% of a student will achieve in the University. 70% is based on self understanding and own knowledge.
