ok So if the cleveland indians win tonight and the tigers lose the indians clinch? Ok but what if the indians lose and the tigers win? Ok but what if they both lose what happens. I get most of the reasoning for the magic number but can you answer some of my question

the magic number is at one. so if the tigers lose the indians are in. also if the indians win they are in. the only way the indians dont make it is if they lose the rest of their games and the tigers win the rest of theirs.

The magic number is base on the combination of wins and losses between the top 2 teams in a division or even going for the wild card where the team that is the lead cannot lose the division or a playoff spot.
for example: if team A is leading the division by 7 games
with both team A and B have 7 games to play that will mean that Team's A magic # is 1. No matter if Team A wins first or Team B losses that will give the division to team A. Because even if Team A losses all there remaining games and Team B wins all there games there is NO WAY Team B can win the division.

ok ready to give me 10 points, as a baseball reporter i know these things.
Indians win they are the division winners, tigers win and indians win indians win the division, tigers win indians lose, magic # still at 1. Magic numbers cant go up, they can only go down. Example if you have it at 7, it cant ever again be ast 9. it can be at 2 though eventually.

It is a combination of wins and losses by the first and secnd place team. So if it is one for example. The first place has to win one and the second has to lose one.
That would be the clincher.
It is a dividible number by games played and wins by the first place team to eliminate any others.

Boston got its magic on 10-22 to qualify for the playoffs
