Well people get bored, then there are science classes and some are trying to pull a fast one. I have seen what looks like a coin from clashed dies, turn out to be one that was made by putting two coins overlapped and hit with a mallet. I have seen the S on 1909-S VDB cents fall off when the cent was dipped in acetone. the same with a 1916-D Winged Liberty head dime. If one wants to collect error coins then one must get the book or books on them so he or she knows what to look for. There are a lot of things that can NOT happen at the mint. On the other hand the employees at the mint are people and they do make mistakes. It is common for the mint to use a die too long so as to save money, in that case you get die breaks. On most coins a few small ones mean little, but a lot of them or a coin with part of the image missing, then has added value. There are a lot of doubled dies out there and one with good eyes and a lupe can find them. some are worth quite a bit of money. I do pick up coins from the ground, a few weeks ago I found a 1944 D over S cent in a stores parking lot. There are ways to collect without spending much money for there are still coins to find in rolls from banks. I got a lot of silver half dollars that way.

I have always been amazed by what people will do to their coins when they are bored. For instance:

I think that people leave old change on the floor because to them it seems to have no great value. I personally pick change up as often as I see it. After a while it begins to add up!
