the absolute best industry to go into to get management training with no experience is the full service restaurant biz. the problem is you have to start out as a server, host or cook, then work your way up. i can't count the number of chain restaurants that promote from within. i'm not talking fast food, i'm saying bonefish grille, ram, rock bottom, those types. i don't know if corporate restaurant management is your thing, but if you put in the time, other opportunities are sure to open up once you've established yourself.

You become a manager by showing you can manage, in most places if someone shows up in your area and looks lost everyone stares at them and does nothing, do you walk up to the person and ask why they are there? If you saw that a delivery was being made with a bad product, do you stop the delivery and get the boss? Remember being the manager means dealing with all the problems in a department or business and if thats what you want, show people that that is what you can do. Then when you go out looking for a managment job you have something to talk about.

The reality is that you will never be recruited straight into a management position. So you need to consider which industry sector you wish to work in and start as a non-manager. At interview ask what development opportunities there are and if there is a management training programme. Every manager needs to take time off for holidays etc so you can get on training courses and substitute for your manager in their absence. This coupled with hard work and enthusiasm will start you on your way as a manager and you can progress from there. Good luck I hope it works out for you.

You need experience first. If you think you have that experience, it would be wise to let your manager know that you are interested in moving up. Managers like to see ambitious employees. Do the extra work, and have a superior work ethic in comparison to your peers, and you will stand out. It may take a little while to get the promotion, but that is the way it is done. They are not going to approach you, you have to approach them.

Once you get a management title on your resume, you can look for something better, and keep moving up.

Good Luck

Happens all the time doesn't it?
I don't know what industry you were thinking of, but i can say that Asda do have what they call their Stepping Stones training scheme where colleagues are trained as they work to become managers. At the end of it, those that pass go on to become managers but all the time they are training they are doing the same job as the managers and gaining experience as they do.

Wal-Mart is one huge company that promotes from within rather quickly. Start out as a stock person or cashier and within 6 months you could be in a management position if you work hard and make your interest in advancing known to your manager.

Show that you are a good worker that know what you are doing. Work your way up to shift manager, then assistant manager, and on up to manager. That easy. I see it all the time where I work.

The only thing you can do is be as good as you can in your present position to show upper management that you deserve the promotion. Don't dwell on how unfair you think it is, accept it as a challenge. Good Luck

Perhaps you could find a place you really would like to work in and offer to volunteer a few hours a week. That way, you gain managerial experience and can include it on your resume. If you can't beat them, join them. Try it. It always works.
