The U.S.A. is a democratic republic, which means we elect representatives to govern us instead of governing ourselves.
A true democracy, in this age of advanced technology, could be a better form of governance for this country since "the people" seem to be a lot smarter than those we elect.
Our republic is now ruled by an upper-class clique of wealthy elitists, industrialists, corporate entities, and power brokers - all of whom make decisions that will allow them to become wealthier and more powerful.
Democracy is not necessarily "mob rule". Throughout history, tribal units and villages have traditionally decided how their communities are managed through 'town hall meetings' or 'public councils' that give everyone the opportunity for discourse before a popular vote is taken and law is imposed. In most instances, the last person to speak would be the "chief" or the "president" or the "head honcho" - not so that he 'calls the shots', but so that he insures that all citizens have had their say and all issues have been thoroughly discussed.
It's a fair, balanced and objective means of governance... one that America (and the world) will have to return to once our global community can no longer worship at the alters of consumption and materialism, power and status,
or hierarchy and influence. Once arrogance, avarice and hubris sets in, any society crumbles, as evidenced by the great Greek and Roman empires. Next to collapse: the United States of America because of its slothful, amoral, competitive, greedy populace which has allowed a corrupt and bloated government to bring itself to the brink of ruin.

Pure democracy is mob rule

A democratic republic, which is the USA, is a representative government that elects representatives by popular vote, but those representatives can make decisions that is good for the country, but the people don't really want.

You do not want to live in a pure democracy. It could result in you going to prison because you do not agree with the majority.

A pure democracy could outlaw all opposing parties. Which some in the USA would like, just as long as it's not their party.

our form of government is represenitive..we elect people to vote for us..in a true democracy, we would vote on everything, bar none..who has the time for that? i don't want un-informed malcontents deciding how things should be..if enough of them get together and get enough votes to elect one of their own (i'm looking in your direction ron paul and kusinich voters) then all the power to them..but for now, it's best to keep the patients in the asylums where they can't harm themselves. and they would.
