Because in a world like the one we live in, that is what is taught to us. For instance, take the Cinderella story - she went from rags to riches because she was beautiful. Not because she had a nice personality or a good head on her shoulders (true, she got the dress because she was nice, but the prince fell in love with her because she was beautiful). We have all of these gorgeous movie stars that everyone idolizes (ie. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Angelina Jolie), and they are the ones who get the good roles in movies. Therefore, girls are made to think that if they have looks, they have popularity as well. In a world where the majority of the people calling the shots are men, a lot of younger women just figure they are lucky if they are thought of as arm candy. Some grow out of that as they get older, but some continue to live with that illusion.

You may want to speak to women directly. What you believe to be true is the effect of Hollywood, and advertising. If you took a poll you would find more women (people in general) worship money more than beauty. Mankind in general wants power and money first, beauty is near the top of the list, wisdom, morality, and self worth (the real valuable traits) are close if not at the bottom of the list

I don't believe that. A mind is so much more beautiful than outside looks. If everyone were blind, what would looks matter anyway?
Perhaps other women are brainwashed by all of the television shows, movies, and MEN who put so much emphasis on looks?

Because the public version of our culture shows women who are camera-worthy getting all of the attention.
Young women who steer away from pop culture a little bit learn that there is more to being recognized in the world than perfect skin and hair.

As a woman I don't think that looks are everything! It is very nice if we are nice looking, as that can boost our confidence, but brains are very important to most of us you know! And we generally like our men to have brains also, as that makes life easier!

Because we've been brainwashed by the media that looks resolve all. Not smart enough? Look pretty to get a smart guy to take care of you. Poor? Look pretty to get a rich guy to take care of you. It's like that and that's the way it is.
