Messenger was designed by Microsoft to allow developpers to talk to each other while working. Great in a closed environment!
However, nowadays, it has NO advantages, but just serious problems...
- It is a widely open door to any kind of hacking
- It consumes a lot of processing ressources (keeps your computer busy for no reason - well, being informed that you just received a message? Don't see the point!)
- It continually monitors the web activity (and hence, uses your bandwidth)
I have removed it a long time ago... and don't want it.

Well, yahoo messenger has a lot of adherents, and so does AIM. There are even a few who like MSN. If you have friends that are online, it's usually pretty much essential to have at least one of these installed on your computer, so that you can chat.
Personally, i have friends that use all three, so I use Trillian, which connects to all of them, plus ICQ, Jabber and a lot of others. You can get the free version of Trillian here: http://www.download.com/Trillian/3000-2150-10047473.html
Use it for as long as you like, and you can upgrade to the paid version if you ever want to, or not.
