There is so much unjust in this world at the moment, and the one thing Mr Brown can do, is to allow parents the right of knowledge, the god given right to protect their children, and stop hiding the animals that live amongst us. I don't want a witch hunt, or to go on a vigilante manhunt, all I desire is to know if a paedophile lives in my local area. Children need protecting, and if we knew that info, everyone would be extra careful of the little cherished ones.

I tend to agree with some of the points raised by Wishmaster. Although I am a mother any would do anything to protect my child I think the problem lies with the legal system and to some extent society. We have a person go through the system and serve time for the crime they have committed. If they manage to serve their complete sentence in full what is left - that is what we have said is acceptable. Should we not look to change the punishment rather than have the ordinary Joe turn into a criminal trying to protect his/her family from an individual who has serve their time. Not that I am making excuses for the offender but if the crime is so hainess to the point where we believe that the person can never be redeem the most effective solution would be to take their life rather than teasing them with the hope of freedom.

No.
If there is a published list like this people would end up panicking and taking the law into their own hands. Now that's bad, but also there are some people in the community who, well - are thick.
Remember 'Sarah's law' in the News of the World campaign a while back? remember how they targeted the WRONG PEOPLE? EG Someone who just happened to have the same name as a convicted paedophile? Or the Paediatric Dr who was attacked as people were too damn stupid to know the difference between people who HURT children and MAKE THEM BETTER.
If there is a list such as this all you will do is drive these people underground and they will be lost to the Police, Social & Probation Services - Then they will be free to hurt kids and won't be picked up.
Now don't get me wrong - These people need to be caught and punished, but exposing them in this way I feel will only do more harm than good.
If it was down to me I would make it law that these people were castrated - Take away the testostrine take away the urge to hurt kids - Problem solved (plus of course a long stint in prison.)

How would this work? Do the police notify community members? Or is it councils if they are rehoming sex offenders in a council house? Woul dwe find out if a sex offender bought a house next door to us? And if they did how woul dwe ensure that they are no bus loads of vigilanties standing around the corners?
I worry that there is such a scary amount of sex offenders out there if the public knew the location of each one we'd never let our kids out to play ever again. I think its better to keep a closer eye on our kids and let the police keep an eye on the perverts.

there are a few flaws in this
1) this would only show-up convicted paedo's.
2) parents should be taking care of their children weather there's a convicted paedo in the area or not.
3) you may not turn vigilante but chances are others would. this would drive them under-ground and no-one would know where they were. (this has happened before. one person was driven out of their home by a mob)
if you're so concerned give the police more money to watch them, don't put them to the mercy of every one they pass on the street.

In the US you can go online and type in your zip code. You can find out how many child molesters are in your neighborhood but no names are given. It just shows a dot on the block where they live. I was shocked. Far more than I realized, and I live in a neighborhood of young professionals with very few children.
There are far more out there than we realize. Scarey world indeed.

I would rather that they were better monitered than a lynch mob turning up (usually at the wrong door). This (as another answerer said) would make the paedophiles go into hiding and then no one would know where they were.

no petition needed just go to local police station they have to inform the community if there is a sex offender living there.
