Barry Sanders was the best,he had a raw natural talent to run, fake, and hit a hole with such a burst of speed and then stop just as fast and then burst again leaving the defender frozen in his tracks, and there was something I heard about him being in the 90% range somewhere of making the 1st man miss throughout his career.those abilities make him #1.

Barry Sanders was a fantastic running back and left the game on top. Smart move, it's a very demanding position to play. However, I think the best running back to ever play was Jim Brown. If you ever get the chance to see some videos of some of his runs, you will see what I mean. He also left the game on top with a lot left in the tank.

Barry Sanders was great, but I've seen him get shut down before. I'd take Walter Payton, Earl Campbell, John Riggins, and Jim Brown before Sanders. I like power backs, instead of finesse running.

Barry was the most fun to watch, but I don't think he was the best. I'm not old enough to have seen Jim Brown play, so I won't comment on him. I have seen Walter Payton play, and he was the best I've ever seen. He could do it all. He ran with finesse, then lowered his shoulder and delivered a blow when he knew he couldn't juke you. He could catch coming out of the backfield. He was the best blocking tailback I've ever seen. Not only on pass protection, but he would also lead block sometimes. And he holds the record for most TD passes by a running back ion his career.

Sweetness! Walter! Never, ever, forget just how wretched and pathetic the rest of his team was until the end of his career! People talk about backs not being able to run with lines like Miami's and Oakland's, but go back and look at what the master could do, he was simply the greatest football player ever, and the most artistic, and most entertaining, and this is coming from a Miami fan.

I think Barry is the greatest, but its hard to compare him against guys like Payton and Smith because he didn't show the same longevity they did. You could make the same argument for Jim Brown.

1. Walter Payton
2. Barry Sanders
3. Jim Brown
4. Emmitt Smith
5. O.J. Simpson

The top three are pretty much interchangeable though. All three of them were and still are gods amongst men in the NFL.

He was good...but not the greatest...
