I rented a few DVDs from a store for 2 dollars each. Most of the DVDs do not work properly. I complained to the shopkeeper that it doesn't work - but she says it works very well. She says the DVDs are always tested for flaws & only the 100% efficient ones are the ones that they rent to customers. She says it could be a problem with my computer or CD drive.

What can I do?

In the stores where you rent them, they are able to PLAY them......don't leave until she puts it in at the store and sees it herself. THEY can't be absolutely SURE they work -- so she's wrong....

There are too many DVD players out there that are built so cheaply that they don't always work very well. Add to that, there are many people who do no maintenance on their DVD players, such as cleaning the dust/dirt buildup on the laser pickup.

Store guarantees are given at the discretion of the owner. There are no legal requirements to provide any guarantees. Your only option is to do business with another store. If you run into the same problem with them, then you may want to check your own equipment for reliability.

Stop renting from that store. What's wrong with Netflix or Blockbuster?

Have you tried the DVDs on different machines ?
If they don't run on any of your gear, maybe the fault isn't at
your end.
Change stores.
