I have just got a new garden pond with a pump filter. Do I have to keep this running all the time or just a couple of hours a day?

It CAN work by only running it during certain hours. Such as the hottest hours of the day when oxygen drops lowest and mosquitoes are most active.

But that allows for a certain amount of "oops" which you can stray over the line and get a die-off. Especially if your area is prone to power outs or brownouts which are also most likely during the hottest hours of the day.

What you might consider is an alternate power source, or a secondary system on an alternate power source. Solar? Wind? Large dogs that love water (believe it or not can give the same benefits).

One that I love is a small decorative windmill if you are in a good area for it. The mill does nothing but power an old-style water mill lifting system. It lifts the water up then spills it down over something like filters or maybe a waterfall/fountain arrangement. Its very ornamental. Its NOT a good idea for a primary system but it makes a great secondary/backup so that you can run your electrical system only part time without as much concern.

If you do a search for windmill pond aerators, then get thru all the ads for big fancy systems, you can find some do-it-yourself projects that you might enjoy.

You dont say what's the concern blanket weed, grimy water. you are able to upload a uv equipment which will help yet not thoroughly treatment, if rain water is flowing from the floor into the pond making grimy water, dig everywhere in the area from the place the water is flowing placed a percentmembrane in back fill with gravel so as that water is saved in that area and upload some lavatory flowers. I you save draining the pond water you at the instant are not giving the pond time to envision its stability. upload a bio filter out with a water fall equipment, on the return to the pond chanel the water with a coated gulley fill with smalll stones which will filter out the return water. If blanket weed is in pond, at a providers you ought to purchase small straw bales which you go with the flow in the pond and have faith it or not it works as I quite have had the comparable issues in england.

it's actually best to keep it running 24-7..... when the water is moving, when it's 'on', there's little chance of a mosquito laying eggs there... less problems with algae growth... and the water stays areated and doesn't go stagnant and stink.... just remember to clean out the filter about weekly.... enjoy your new pond!!!.....

A few hours a day. Depending on how much dust and dirt in your air.
