there are three kinds of acid rxn :
1. acid + metal = salt + hydrogen
2. acid + base = salt + water
3. acid + carbonates = salt +water + carbon dioxide

therefore the possibilities are either hydrogen or carbon dioxide gases are given off. but metals are not usally found in the soil so the soil has to contain some form of carbonate

The soil must contain limestone, and the bubbles are carbon dioxide.

if bubbles occur when acid is poured on the soil is alkaline
