Hi everyone, my car does this weird thing where it seems like it loses the ability to change gears (auto transmission) and I don't know what the problem is. I've taken it to the mechanics and as it only does this sometimes not all the time they cannot rule out for sure what it is. I am driving along then all of a sudden it is like it won't change gears and it is not a problem with the transmission itself. Can you please offer any advice on what it may be and how to fix it please? Sometimes it seems to happen when I've filled up the car, but I can't say for sure... What could this be and how can I fix this? It is a Mitsubishi Magna. Any advice is appreicated :-) Thanks

The transmission is fine, apparently... They are trying to rule things out. I've had the spark plugs replced and a few other bits and pieces.. I don't know where to go from here!!! HELP!!!

Your transmission could be slipping for a few reasons, I would recommend the obvious which is first checking the transmission fluid levels. If they are within normal range, then I would try Lucas transmission treatment. It is a thick candy red substance that will help( can find it at most auto parts stores.). If this still doesnt work than it is something that a transmission specialist will have to fix. $$$. But if you try these two things first, you could save yourself the trip to aamco. Good Luck

I'm not clear on what you mean. Do you mean it won't go into first gear? 2nd gear? 3rd gear? Anything above 1st gear? etc.

Can you describe your problem further?

Also if it's from 3rd to 4th, be aware that in some cars there is an engine coolant temp sensor that prevents your transmission from upshifting into 4th or overdrive until the engine is warm.

As far as replacing the plugs, that really has almost absolutely nothing to do with the transmission gear changes so when you state that, I'm curious about the accuracy of your details from your initial question.

How old is the car? how many miles? when was or has the transmission ever been serviced " fluid and filter changed"? Does the car run good even it won't shift?
Guess would be transmission "Control Module" going bad, will stop it from shifting. Can you get it to do it with a mechanic from a "Transmission" with you?
