My background is in pubs.
It is amazing to see just how many pubs are now owned by Woolworths.
You make a really good point Molly. The larger chain stores watch their competitors pricing, and then slash their own prices way below cost on a few items to lure the shopper.
It isn't just groceries and pubs... petrol is another one, pharmacies etc.etc.

The last small privately own supermarket in my area had done a booming trade for decades, competing against the big boys for years. Then WW decided to open two stores in the area (and being in WA) not one of the 3 major supermarkets (Coles and WW) are open on sundays, the old supermarket not only operated on sundays, but sold excellent local produce. I was dissapointed to see more imported asian vegetables and fish, all of dubious quality and when I asked what the australian produce was, I was shown a lonelly little sign for one seafood product from a total of 20 or so pieces. Suffice to say I try harder to shop locally and buy local products. In the Fremantle markets there is a variety of beautiful local produce that I am happy to travel the distance to purchase. All the local small stores perhaps rely more on weekend trade, but I fear they will soon be out competed by the larger companies. Once there used to be a local hardware/gardening store, a couple of newsagents and a handful of deli's, now there is only one deli for miles around.

This also applies to farms which are, in effect, small businesses.
However, don't be naive about what the government and the banks mean by "small business". When my former partner and I applied to a bank for a $30,000 loan many years ago to open a restaurant, we were turned down, as we were "too small"!! They are only interested in businesses with a turnover of at least $1million a year.
Mind you, there are plenty of corner shops and small supermarkets in Melbourne. Our local IGA successfully competes with nearby Coles and Safeways, probably because the proprietors are well-known and dearly loved members of the local community, and give good service.

I agree with the three previous answers, the number of small businesses has been reduced by the larger stores and businesses like Coles and Woolworths/Safeway. I too dislike the amount of imported goods, especially fruit and vegetables along with shoes and clothing that are on the market instead of local Australian goods.

I think in WA there are a lot more small business's than there were 2 years ago. BUT, Big companies sit back and watch them if it is of interest to them. If they go under, Too Bad. If they make it the big boys will buy them out.(Or squeeze them out more like it). Howard and Co do not give a damn about small business, Yet they believe in Him. Even if it is the wrong and false feeling of security.
