I can see you are getting a lot of conflicting answers to your question, so the long and short of it is a male can not live with any other bettas, male or female. Bettas vary in aggression, but are NOT ruthless killers and fighting machines as many people portray them. Most bettas can cohabit peacefully with a number of other fish species as long as one is careful to avoid anything small enough to fit in Mr. Betta’s mouth, any thing so big that Mr. Betta would fit in its mouth, and anything that will chew/nip the betta’s fins (this type of damage can lead to infection and death). Bettas are generally only territorial within their own species. Males can also not live with female bettas as they will chase and harass her endlessly if she does not have anywhere to escape to. You should always try to house a betta in the largest home your space and budget allow for. Try to avoid housing bettas in tiny spaces (commonly sold betta hexes, etc), try a one gallon bowl, they are easier to keep up the water quality in. DO NOT buy pre-divided tiny tanks to house multiple bettas, the constant stress of thinking a rival is invading their territory and having to look at him all day will weaken you fish. Instead use individual bowls and put them far enough apart that their inhabitants can not see each other.

Females are a little bit of a different story, they can usually live together in groups of 3 or more. If you are going to keep female bettas together get at least a ten gallon tanks and plant it densely. If you notice an abnormally large amount of aggression (some fin nipping and chasing is common for the first few das as they establish a pecking order) try and see which female is the instigator and just remover her. Often once the overly aggressive female is removed the rest of your group will settle down. This does not always work, but through many years of keeping females together in community aquariums I have learned that it works more often than not. Hope you enjoy your betta(s) they are wonderful fish!

P.S. To whomever said that when bettas are bred they are housed separately and then their "fluids" mingle, I would recomend goggling one of 1000 images of the betta matting embrace there are available online. Watching bettas mate is one of the most beautiful things you will ever see, even after ten years I still find myself captivated by them.

no, they can't

if you want to have more then one betta fish, you need at least a 10 gallon tank whereas you can put up to 5 female bettas together which also needs to be heavily planted

A minimum of 3 females is required though, that they can choose the so called pecking order

If you would only get 2, one will dominate the other one, which is stressful for the less dominant one

you definately can't put male/female or male/male together

hope that helps
Good luck

*Sometimes* a male and female can live together, but from my experience it is rare.
Males cannot live together. They are territorial and will rip each other apart.

They are territorial within their own species, and any other species of fish that happens to have bright colors and long flowing fins.
This is why they can sometimes live with a female, because they are rather plain and without the flowing fins. But then the females also have a problem with aggression as well.

Only if they are 2 females. Males are highly aggressive and will fight to the death. The Males can't even be put together in the same tank as a female. They have a special breeding tank so they don't have contact but their fluids will combine making offspring.

They will kill one another. Actually one beta fish cannot live with any other type of fish. Its a combat fish and will destroy whoever is in its territory.
