I am either getting a laptop or iBook for my Dad's house. I have A Windows XP computer at my mum's and wanted to try out an iBook. My mate has a PC, iBook and iMac and they say it is really good. Can I please have some pros and cons for either of them, I know Macs can install windows xp or vista which I am going to do if I get one but will the Windows on the iBook lag if i get a basic iBook (new but cheap).

Also on a laptop I can guarantee that Adobe After Effects will lag because on my Windows it does and I have a lot of ram (more than what comes with a Laptop). Will it lag on a iBook? I have heard it is extremely powerfull but i want to do a lot of editing and will iBook be a better choice?

Thanks, Dillon

Windows

Pros: Gaming, business, compatibility, upgradeable hardware
Cons: Viruses, spyware,

Macs

Pros: More stable OS, photo/video editing
Cons: Incompatibility issues with Windows even if you use the same program, hardware is not upgradeable

Laptops generally have weaker graphics cards which is why your laptop with Windows lags so much when you are editing. Adobe AE isn't lagging because it's on Windows, it's mainly due to a poor graphics card. A new MacBook may run faster mainly because its newer, but the same could be said about a new PC. I strongly suggest you don't get a laptop for editing, they are just too weak compared to desktops. If you still want a laptop, get one with a good graphics card like nVidia GeForce 8500 or better.

macs are overhyped on prefomance and adobe photoshope runs fine on windows theres no lag thats just apple slander.. adobie made the software so if there was a lag then they would have fixed it by now really my setup has 2 OSes 1/3 windows patition 1/3 shared space (NTFS) 1/3 ubuntu linux 7.04 fisty faun.
windows for running commertal apps
shared area for music, video and such that both need
linux with ntfs-3g installed so i have an area i can do things without worring about virouses and such to do such an installation you will need a pc with a hardrive of at least 30 gigs a windows cd a knoppix cd and a unbuntu fisty cd
first you install windows. then you use the knoppix cd to partition the drive without having the hard drive active you need to make 4 partitons 3 biggons one small 2 of the biggons need to be ntfs the one thats there needs to be resised to let you install the other 1 ntfs partiton then a ext3 partiton then the small one the linux swap, the linux swap is like the windows pagefile, linux like to have it outside for sme reason once you have the partiton set up install ubuntu fisty then youll be done make shoure to isntall the neccary ntfs-3g file from the package manager once you have linux installed.

to get the root password in knoppix open the second menu from the main menu then use QTparted to partition the drives..it will take a few tries to get the sizes perfect

i left some parts out so you can have fun doing it or becouse i cannot tell you but this setup should meet any challenge you meet :) BTW pc is more powerful, mac hardware is never good but it shore is shiny O_O. XD

I used to be a Windows person, so much so that I was anxious in spending the $3k for a MacPro... Now I will NEVER (I repeat, NEVER) go back to a PC. All professional designers and editors use Macs, they are simply known to be extremely powerful. The only con for a Mac is the price, but it will seriously be one of the best investments you'll make! Windows always have lots of problems, and now I can't even think of one nice thing to say about them!
