I used to, so I know how they feel.
It's not really uncommon.
And no, most people don't do it for attention. Any psychologist could tell you that.
People self-injure for many different reasons. In many instances, it's because they didn't learn healthy ways to deal with stress when they were children. Many people harm themselves because they have emotions that they don't know how to deal with.
Cutting doesn't make you "emo", seeing as cutting has been around for thousands of years longer than this "emo" trend has. (In many countries, people used to cut themselves as part of a spiritual or religious ritual, or out of mourning.)

*** Haha The toll free EMO hotline .... thats brilliant!!***
Theres a fine line between, scarification and self injure. The later does not adhere to the beautiful and free wills of the universe. I don't want to relate, and they shouldn't have wanted to either. Disgusted, no. Sympathise, no. I do empithise with anyone that is lead to believe, they are better off hurt, or not here at all. Sh*ts bigger than that, and we need everyones help. It's like they are stuck in a shell, and don't feel they can get out. Thats when the rest of us need to do our best to ope their eyes. Beauty is the ultimate reality, self injury is counter-progression for everyone. What if in 10 or 30 years you figure out the slightest SOMETHING that immortalizes your ability to simply THINK!! I'll drink to that! ;)

I even shriek looking at papercuts, obviously I'm going to shriek on this one(on the inside of course). As a human, of course I feel sympathise and scared by those who injure themselves. I have a friend who enjoys cutting herself. Sometimes I got angry at her for coming at me after cuts herself not before. I was so scared and worried that I might loose her. Just hope that she could be more braver and positive towards her problems in the future.

It depends on why the person does it. If it's only because of the attention they get then I think they should find other ways since those that have a real problem isn't taken seriously because of them.
Self injure is a symptom of something else being wrong. It can have many causes and I wish that the ones that self injure will find help. Unfortunately there are not many that takes the self injuring seriously or they go all nuts and try to save them from suicide. Most that self injures is not suicidal per se and they shy away from those that think it is.

Some people do that as a cry for help others I wouldn't know their objectives...I couldn't really relate but I knew a couple of people that have done that to themselves...They would say it was a way to deal with the pain they were going through...

I think they are looking for control and a way to feel something. It hurts me to look at the scars and wonder what must go through someones mind to make them injure themselves so badly.
But then again, I smoke, so aren't I doing it too? Just on the inside.

A lot of people who self injure were molested as children. They have unbelievably messed up self esteem issues. I think it's sad, but I think if people tell them how disgusting they are it will only make them hate themselves more. They need help.
