In adjusted ERA, Mussina is only #16 in active pitchers and Pettite is #21. This means they are both very fine pitchers, but not looking like HOF members. In won-loss %, it's Pettite 8 and Moose 9. In wins, neither looks likely to get much past 250; without outstanding other numbers, that's going to hurt them. Also, Pettite has two 20 win seasons and Moose none. I don't personally think that's the end of the world, but it is a factor.
Here's the central problem--their competition includes Clemens, Maddux, Glavine, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz, and Curt Schilling among guys around their age. Coming up behind them (and making some guesses) there are Santana, Sabbathia, Beckett, and who knows who else.
They just don't seem like they will be making the cut barring something extraordinary (like a few no-hitters or more WS rings or Cy Young award seasons).

No, and no.
But they are still playing, and so have chances to improve their candidacies.
Their biggest challenge? Contemporaneous peer group. Moose and Pet have been on the field while some of the greatest pitching careers in history have been ongoing -- Clemens, Maddux, Glavine, Johnson, and Martinez. They make for a tough, tough crowd from which to stand out. Mussina is probably the sixth (no higher) or seventh best pitcher of this era, and that may not be enough for Cooperstown.

I don't think either will make the Hall of Fame. In my opinion, to make the hall, you have to be one of the absolute best in baseball during your career, or put up some incredible numbers to make it.
Pettitte: 200 wins is not incredible. A 3.81 career ERA is good, but not great. He also was not considered anywhere to be one of the absolute best at any time. Very good? Yes. One of the absolute best? NO.
Mussina: Currently at 249 wins...with a 3.69 career ERA. Again not bad, but not spectacular. Never did jack in the postseason and never was considered a dominant pitcher.
If either one of these guys were to get 300 wins, then yes, they would get into the hall. 300 wins is an outstanding achievement. Both have a long way to go for that.

You forgot Mussina has pitched two perfect games into the ninth inning, both he lost with one out to go. That is how close Mussina can get into the hall of fame unless he gets 300 wins. Look at Bert Blyleven, 260 wins and 3000 strikeouts, and he hasn't gotten in yet. Did you know the Yankees haven't won a World Series since they signed him in 2000?
The writers are a bunch of jerks, they very select on who gets in and who doesn't. They always compare pitchers to Cy Young, even though he pitched in the dead ball era.
How do you know Andy's gonna keep going after 2007?
He hinted at retirement last year at this time. He's been burnt out over his entire Career. He definetly gets a plague in Moneument Park.

If they both retired today neither would make it. Mussina has a better shot, but he's not there yet. Pettitte would have to have a remarkable late in life surge to even be considered. With his elbow problems and the fact he has hinted at retirement in the past, I can't it happening.

Not many more years left, each. I don't think Pettitte will make it. 200 wins doesn't mean a whole lot. David Wells has 200 wins. As for Moose, probably not, unless he approaches 300 wins. He doesn't have that great of a resume overall. No 20-win seasons, poor postseason starts, and doesn't blow you away in strikeouts.

As good as they are, there are too many pitchers with 200 victories, and less than 300, awaiting the Hall. Unfortunately, neither will probably make it. They'll go into the Yanks' Hall, though.

Neither of them are a lock at this point. Both big maybes. THere are many other pitchers still playing with better numbers.

They have a chance, but keep in mind , if there are people on the voting committee who doesn't like them for whatever reason, then their chances are not good.
