A cleaner way to solve:
a^2+2a+1 = (a+1)^2 =9=3^2
(a+1)^2 - 3^2 =0
Using a^2-b^2 = (a+b)(a-b)
(a-2)(a+4) = 0
or a=-4 or 2

PS: Boogie made the mistake in getting the final answer. The one above me is correct though but wasn't there when I was composing.

finding the "a" is also called finding the "0" or "x"

9 = a^2 + 2a + 1
set the problem to equal to 0. move the nine over.
9 - 9 = a^2 + 2a + 1 - 9
this would give us
0 = a^2 + 2a - 8
factor this out
(a+4)(a-2)
now set each binomial equal to 0 to find a
a+4 = 0
make "a" by itself. minus 4
a+4-4 = -4
this will become
a = - 4
do the same for the other binomial
a-2 = 0
make "a" by itself. plus 2
a-2+2 = +2
a = 2

ANSWERS = -4 and 2

an easy way to find the zeros after you factor them is to do the opposite of what it says inside the parentheses.

a^+2a+ 1 = 9
therefore by formula
(a+b)^=a^+2ab+b^
therefore
(a+1)^ = 9
therefore by removing the square and taking root of 9
(a + 1) = root of 9
(a+1) = (+ or - 3)
therefore taking 1 on other side
a= (+ or - 3 ) - 1
therefore
a = 3 - 1 or -3 -1
therefore a = 2 or a = -4 hope it helped you take care.!!!!

9=a^2 + 2a +1
0=a^2 + 2a -8
0= (a-4) x (a+2)
a= 4 or a = -2

a² + 2a - 8 = 0
(a + 4)(a - 2) = 0
a = - 4 , a = 2

a^2+2a+1=9
a^2+2a+1-9=0
a^2+2a-8=0
then factor....
(a+4)(a-2)=0
a+4=0
a=-4
a-2=0
a=2

a is -4 and 2

well i know the answer is 2.i tried to solve it...but i got the wrong answer...so i checked it out like this:

9=(2)^2+2(2)+1
9=4+4+1
9=9

see how it checks out?sorry i cant tell you exactly how to do it...but at least you know the answer!

9 - 1 = 8
So...
8 = a^2 + 2a
And....
I suck at the rest but...a=2 or -4...I think...
