We don't listen.
Many people hear a few words and decide they know what the other person is saying before the thought gets fully expressed, and then they respond that way.
Some listen only enough to hear when the speaker is finished, so that they can say what they've been planning to say.
Some don't understand what's been expressed, but they don't ask for clarification.
Some have preconceived notions about the other person and they respond from the lens of that conception, rather than the actual human being in front of them.
Most of us bring our pre-judgments into play when another is expressing something.
Hope these ideas help you. I know you'll get many others. Good Luck!

The two main obstacles to better understanding are politics and religion. If they were both removed from the equation, many of the artificial barriers they create would disappear.
Think of when you go abroad on holiday, do the local people have any prejudice against you or do they accept you into their society and talk with you? In most cases I would guess at the latter. The only reason most people have for disliking each other as a race is propagandist ideas put forward by their leaders.
When people go on holiday, they don't go to tell the rest of the world they are hated. They travel to explore other cultures and to understand how other people live.
Xenophobia is a created fear not an innate one. People are made afraid of each other to prevent them from learning about how similar we all are.

Your understanding of me is limited by your willingness or unwillingness to do so. For you to understand me, you must have a general interest in the outcome. If you dislike me or hate me, you are unlikely to want this outcome. If you judge me, you are unlikely to make the effort to understand me.
If you want to be alone, understanding me becomes an obstacle to your goal.

pity those that we hate because they cannot forgive our hate until we forgive their actions. love our fellow man at least at some level. always give and open ear to listen and an open mind to decipher those words combined with the speakers actions. when speaking, know when to be serious and when to play... as a personal tip, i have to say, dont be a stoic person, though those around you will understand you and your predictability, being a spontaneous person is much needed as a challenge to understand, its much needed as something for other to see and realize spantaneity's brilliance. basically when you can understand a crazy person, you can understand anybody's actions

The biggest obstacle in not understanding other person is that we do not try to listen and to understand other person, on the contrary we try to put our view point without listening to them.

The 3 main obstacles are discrimination, racism, and not to care. We love oneself, but the others??? We need to accept others ( it means to see others just the way we see ourselves), we tend to see faults and disagrements with others, but we don't see that in ourselves. We must learn others instead of discredit them. Take care.

We need to love each other. Once that barrier is crossed, every single person on this planet will understand eachother.
