Both are good free anti-virus products. I have used both and they work well without being resource hogs.
If you are going buy a product, there are many to choose from
I would suggest staying way from Norton.
Here is a good article to read.

In my humble opinion, I'd recommend two programs, Norton Anti-virus which updates very frequently. The second is a key logging, spy-ware protection program Spysweeper by Webroot, it also updates very often. My IT consultant set me up with these 4 years or so ago on my laptop, my desktop at home and the 2 laptops my associates use, and we have never had an issue of any type.

I use two of them that I recommend. Both are free. AVG antivirus Free Edition (www.download.com) and Avast Antivirus (www.download.com) both of them are good. I lean a bit more towards AVG. Its easy to use. just download it, install it, update it (point to the internet and click always use this option) and then run the scan.
I also agree with the poster above me. Stay away from Norton and if you have McAfee installed in your system uninstall it. I have recovered so many computers that were infected that had Mc Afee installed. I compare Mc Afee with a Security Guard that sleeps on the job.

Spysweeper is the way to go.
The best software you should get is Spysweeper with Anti-virus, this software is too good and gets better everyday. This is ELITE software. It blocks over 450,000 definition threats, which contain multiple fringerprints with each(you can do the math). No other software can compete with that or come close for that matter. It catches everything and has active shields. I've used them all and it is 2nd to none.
Don't waste your time with AVG, true sword, spybot, ad aware, CA, spyhunter, mcafee, superantispyware, avast, panda, kaspersky, spyware blaster, spyware guard, windows defender or anything of the sort. Stay away from anything that is FREE when it comes to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they are free. They are NOT good. I even guaranDAMNtee my answers and will help through IM if needed.

Avg updates every day and scans every day when you tell it to it's a good program.
Tip: tell it to scan and update when you asleep.

I recommend purchasing security suite (a/v, firewall) from a reliable vendor such as mcafee... as long as you keep your subscription up to date, configure the program properly to automaticaly install the updates, etc... then you should be fine... as long as you combine that with good browsing habits and common sense.
good luck.
