... has strong pedophilic undertones? For instance, it seems like the younger the female character, the more gratuitous panty shots there are. Or you've always got these little twelve year old girls with massive cleavage, and little hearts floating up from their ninja-warrior blade as they slice through zombies, monsters, and whatnot ('cause every anime character has to be a ninja warrior...) Is there just a major obsession with preteen girls in Japan, or what? Oh, and don't get me started on the voices.

Can't really argue with you about the pedophilic undertones. yeah, the japanese society does have a certain bent (no pun intended) when it comes to having teenage characters, especially girls.

Now, here is the caveat about that: the Japanese have a completely different take on what sexy is than Americans do. Sex, in general, is treated a bit differently, so it's not so much that they are all 'pervy' but the cultural expectations are a bit different.

Possibly a more important influence is that young girls tend to have a higher pitched voice - something that is considered, alonf with large eyes, to be very desirable. I'm not sure why that is, but I caught a documentary on anime about 10 years about and they spent a little time discussing both the Japanese view on sexuality and their preference for high-pitched voices (in girls) and large eyes. To illustrate the eyes, Jackie Chan - who is Chinese, I know - had surgery performed to make his eyes look larger, so as to appeal to a wider audience.

This may not be the argument you were looking for, but I think that we tend to read a bit more into SOME of this than maybe we should. Now, there are definitely some of these anime, I think it's called Hentai, that are just what you think they are....

As far as I know, not all the characters are Asians, therefore, have different features. I've also noticed that the big eyes thing is mainly used to portray children or innocent (as in pure) people. It varies depending on the artists really. Now, this is my assumption, but having bigger eyes or different features might make it easier for the characters to display emotions. Maybe the range is wider.. I don't know. Just saying what's coming through my mind.

Yeah... there's definitely plenty of that out there. Especially when you are looking at series like Moetan and Kodomo no Jikan. These shows are one step away from being hentai.

Of course, if you get away anime that can be defined by the comedy genre, you start to see a whole lot less of that sort of thing.

My friend Frank (the Tank) was stationed in Japan (Okinawa), and he said there is a lot of preteen obsession going on there.

Yeah, I've noticed it too. I don't know if I'd say "most", but its a strongly recurring theme.
