u should be able to scan, just not fax, print, or copy

According to the Brother web site, if one or more of the ink cartridges is empty, the machine has a built in safety feature to disable many of the machines functions. It doesn't say anything about scanning though.

Regardless, I would suggest replacing the cartridge with a fresh, new one.

yes that is very normal.

In a brother you always need ink as it thinks it is a fax machine and will therefore shut down when even one cartridge is empty.

put the ink cartrige back in
