I used to play runescape (www.runescape.com). It is free if you don't become a member but it has pretty bad graphics.

Personally Im in love with Ultima Online.
Most of the complaints about it are about the official servers. If you can get some used CDs and play the free servers run by players then its MUCH better. There were over 300 of them last time I looked.
Also Diablo II is free to play and pretty cool. You can often find CDs for it on something like Ebay.
