The most common networking cable for LANs(Local Area Networks) . It is also called Category 5(Cat 5) twisted-pair cable. It carries the network signal to each point on the network and is used to support 100Base-T Ethernet networks. It has a (Registered Jack) RJ-45 connector(this connector is larger that of the telephone line that uses a RJ-32 connector ) on each end. One end plugs in to the hub and the other end into the networking card at the back of a PC.

ethernet cable, also called UTP for Unshielded Twisted Pairs is typically a 8 conductor cable with 4 pairs of wire inside which each pair inside the cable twisted at a different rate. These are in color combinations of Orange-Orange/White Blue-Blue/White Green-Green/White Brown-Brown/White and are connected on the ends depending on the need in either a straight configuration or a Crossover configuration. Various networking hardware and setups use different ends, so watch carefully, some hardware auto switches based upon the cables. It is a IEEE standard.
Good luck

An ethernet cable is usually a piece of CAT5 cable with two RJ-45 ends on it used to connect to the Internet or network.
The cable has 4 pairs, or a total of eight wires. Two wires are for sending data, two wires are for receiving data, and the rest are for transmitting power across the cable if it is necessary. (This is called Poer over Ethernet or POE)
What else do you need to know?

It is a cable that allows the flow of information between devices. A computer to a router, a computer to a switch, a switch to a router, and so on. The straight-through is what is normally used to connect terminating devices like a router or a computer. It connects devices like a computer to a switch or a switch to a router. You will need a cross-over to connect between two like devices...a computer to a computer, a switch to a switch, and so on. There is a third type that is used on Cisco products called the rollover cable.
They all use two of the four pairs to communicate. There are different categories for different speeds and signal strength. Their ends are usually connected with a RJ-45 jack (an eight pin connector)...looks like a phone connector.

Besides the obvious answer: a cable for the Ethernet protocol?
Nowadays it usually refers to "CAT5 cable" which is unshielded twisted pair 100-BaseT
