There are some narrow-minded and ignorant people out there who would probably avoid having sex with people who they knew have a mental illness, but you wouldn't want to have sex with such idiots anyway.
I think most people would be fine with it. Sometimes you just need to explain what your illness is like to people so that they won't be unsure or nervous about being with you.
Naturally, it also matters a lot what kind of a mental illness it is. There is a huge difference between schizophrenia and claustrophobia. The severity and nature of the illness matters when people decide who to be with.

You didn't say what kind of mental illness (please edit and say) and if you take medication for it and if it is under control. I have PTSD..but I don't consider it exactly "mental illness" as people think of it...altho sometimes it drives ME crazy !!! lol But it's listed as that, I guess..because it effects me mentally. It would be difficult for ME to have sex.....because of what I've been thru... I don't know about your circumstances. Don't just have sex for the sake of having sex. That's not what it's supposed to be about. I 'm sure LOTS of people have sex with mentally ill people without knowing they're mentally ill. Probably the other person doesn't know it either. You don't have to go around "advertising" it to them. But, if you're considering marriage...you should tell them. Any way...that's what I think. Doesn't necessarily mean it's the right answer.
P.S. Why don't you rewrite this and send it to YA Mental Health category? I think they might have some good answers from experience.

From the way you phrased the question… No, you having a mental illness would not stop anyone from having sex with me… ROFLMAO!
But seriously… I guess it depends on what and how bad your situation is.
I guess I’m answering “No, Mental Illness should not stop someone from wanting to be intimate with you” but then again, it depends on how open-minded and accepting THEY are more then how bad your mental illness is.
If someone decides to shun you because your ill then they are not worth your time so be up front with them and if they run away like scared baby’s then think of it as how you just saved yourself from a bad relationship that would only have ended up hurting the both of you in the long run if you had gone with it.
I know that MY mental illness (Depression, anxiety, and B.P.D.) wouldn’t stop anyone from being intimate with me… But I decided that my mental illness would harm those I became involved with so I have taken a “Vow of celibacy” and only have safe, casual encounters. I’m into the BDSM Community so I haven’t had “Sex” with anyone in many a year but have played with others at clubs and gotten the desired “effects” with out actually having to sleep around.
There is more to life then just sex…
In my opinion I believe that you should focus more on “Will my partner support my actions in getting healthy and support me in my bad moments” more then “Will they screw me”.
But then again, it is only my opinion and I don’t place all that much importance on the physical over the mental and emotional.
Good luck to you in whatever you choose to do!

You'll have to be more specific... you mean mental illness as in just a little anxious (anxiety disorder) or schizophrenia? Bit of a difference... anyway, if Britney Spears can still get laid (you know she's got a mental disorder) then I'm sure anyone with a disorder can get laid. Good luck!

It depends on your actions and behavior. IF for instance you go to the bar JUST to hit on chicks for sex then because most people arent dumb, they will avoid you.
There are "expected" social behaviors that are generally considered preliminary to having a sexual relationship with another person who isnt a hooker.
If your whole focus is sex then you will probably have a tough time meeting someone.

It would not be your mental illness that would be the problem.

No, there is absolutely no reason for not having sex with you. But there could be reasons people would choose not to have a relationship with you.
