But seriously? "Sarah tries to make up for it by way of buying flowers for her"... or a sentence to that effect. Using that exact sentence structure, all that comes to mind is "consolation" or "make-up gift"; possibly "desperate measure" =P

Makes no sense. Replacement for what? You could say substitute, but substitute for what? Makes no sense.
