They are old, rusting, and pretty much down to nothing. Most of them are just metal and the white shells. I definitely don't want to take them to the dump. I have no idea about recycling them and don't know where to look into that. I need to get rid of them and have NO idea what to do.

Call a scrap dealer. They will pick them up and pay you for them to boot.

Dishwashers do not contain freon, they are simply old rusty hulks. You say you have 400. Wow! well, where I live and, I'm sure there are other places around the United States, there are people that buy this stuff for the metal, so, you could make a few bucks but, you have to let your fingers do the walking in the phone book first. Find a scrap Yard that will come and, " Pick up" the washers and, you can deal a price.

I don't know what it is now but, a few years back, scrap was at three cents a pound so, you might be looking at a few days in Mexico, wouldn't that be great, want to take me along?

You say that you don't want to take them to the dump. But, you could take them to a metal scrap yard and get money for them by selling them as scrap. Or, if you can't be bothered with that, put an ad in the local newspaper offering free scrap metal in exchange for removal of them from your property.

they might look like junk yes, but the compressors on the units( if still there) contain freon and such, something can be salvaged in this quantity, somehow. you cant just take these to the dump, you have to - at the quantity stated - find the proper place to dispose them at, try salvage dealer, or metals scrap yards, or you will end up on TV as a environmental violator if you just dump them somewhere.
